When preparing a car insurance quotation, insurers will ascertain the type of Use required. For example, a retired person with no employment will require a different Use than say a taxi driver, who uses the vehicle for his work to carry passengers for hire and reward. Obviously, in this example the Use of the vehicle as a taxi presents a higher risk (all other factors being equal), since in all likelihood the taxi will be used to a greater extent, driven in heavier traffic situations and used to carry passenger (which exposes the insurer to a greater risk from third party injury claims).
Not all insurers will provide insurance for every type of Use, and premiums will vary depending on the extent of Use required. Examples of commonly used Classes of Use:
Social, Domestic and Pleasure excluding commuting
Social, Domestic and Pleasure use only (for any named drivers) excluding commuting
Social, Domestic and Pleasure including commuting
Social, Domestic and Pleasure use only (for any named drivers), including driving to and from a permanent place of work.
Class 1 Use
Social, Domestic and Pleasure purposes, including use by the policyholder (or policyholder's spouse) in person in connection with their respective purposes.
