A number of discounts are available to help reduce insurance premiums, although not all are available with all insurers.

Open driving insurances policies (i.e. unrestricted driving) attract the highest premiums, because insurers do not know all the drivers who may drive the vehicle. Some insurers may limit Open Driving policies to certain age groups, for example drivers aged 25 or over.

Where possible, you should aim to restrict the drvers to as few drivers as possible, since this is where the highest discounts available. For example, insurers will generally reward Policyholder only and Policyholder and Spouse only policies with the highest discounts. If you need more people to drive, smaller discounts may also be available for restricting driving to the Policyholder and a certain number (normally up to four) named drivers.

By improving the security of your car, some insurers will reward you with a premium discount. The types of security devices which attract discounts vary from insurer to insurer, but some examples of common security measures are:

Alarm/Immobiliser
A common security device, but insurance companies will generally only offer a discount if the alarm/immobiliser is professionally fitted, generally by a VSIB (Vehicle Systems Installation Board) approved installer. In some cases, the device must be approved (usually by Thatcham - e.g. Thatcham Cat 1 or Thatcham Cat 2 approval).

Tracker
A special, professionally fitted tracking device which is hidden in the vehicle and which can be activated by the tracking company once the theft of the vehicle has been discovered. The signal emitted by the tracking device allow the Police to locate the vehicle.

Insurers are now increasingly offering discounts for insurance on vehicles which cover less mileage.

If your car covers, or you expect it to cover, less than 10,000 miles per year, it is worth asking whether you qualify for a Limited Mileage Discount. Some insurers are now even offering discounts for higher mileage limits.

An excess is the first part of a claim that you pay towards the cost of the claim. If you choose to increase your excess by accepting an additional voluntary excess, then your insurer may offer a premium discount. TOP

Insurance companies may offer you a discount if your car is normally kept in a locked garage overnight. Additionally, if don't have a garage, some insurers may offer a (smaller) discount if your car is normally kept on your drive or private land. TOP
